David Gideon Smith Sawyer%2BI%2BLove

B A S I C _ I N F O

RING NAME: David Gideon Smith

NICKNAMES//MONIKERS: DGS; The Black Blade; The Sovereign; The Archdragon; The Megalith; The Winnower; The Quantum Reaper; The Budokan Butcher

HEIGHT: 6'5"

WEIGHT: 240-245 lbs.

DATE OF BIRTH: 05.14.1986 (age 36)

HOMETOWN: Omaha, NE

RESIDING: Boston, MA

PICTURE BASE: Josh Holloway

P R O F E S S I O N A L _ I N F O

WRESTLING DEBUT: June 2002

ALIGNMENT: True Neutral

MOTIVATION: To win. Beyond that, things get... complicated.

GIMMICK: Hyper-athletic iceman veteran with some not-so-secret blood knight tendencies and a penchant for selective, stoic eloquence. Served hot over a bed of mythic science-fiction.

WRESTLING STYLE: All-inclusive strong style hybrid, with an emphasis on headhunting; while his technical and athletic chops stack up against even the most specialized opponents, Smith's greatest strength -- aside from two decades' knowledge and experience -- is that he hits harder and possesses more pound-for-pound raw power than anyone else in the game.

CHEATING TENDENCY: Rarely; never something he'll resort to for the sake of winning, but if he feels you've earned a thumb in the eye or boot in the groin, smart money says you're gonna get it.

FAVORED MATCH TYPE(S): N/A; if it occurs between two bells and/or four corners, odds are he's seen it before.

DISFAVORED MATCH TYPE(S): N/A; see above.

FAVORED WEAPON(S): Prefers his own hands and feet, but in a pinch? Anything not nailed down.

E N T R A N C E

ENTRANCE THEME: "Pure Power (Instrumental)" by Zardonic

ENTRANCE: The venue is simultaneously plunged into darkness and pierced by light, harsh white strobes picking up the opening sirenlike dirge of Zardonic's "Pure Power". Their intricacy and intensity build for roughly 30 seconds, and after a brief lull the stage lights crash on all on once, their bright-white backlighting the silhouette of David Gideon Smith in the dark.

Ring Announcer: Introducing [first//their opponent]: from Omaha, Nebraska; weighing in at 244 pounds; DAVID! GIDEEEOOOOONNN!! SMIIIIIIIIIITH!!!

DGS begins moving, making his way down the ramp at a brisk clip. He ascends the ring steps and keeps going, making his way up to the top rope, where he pulls back the hood of his poncho and takes a moment to slowly, methodically, survey the ring [including his opponent(s), if he isn't first out] and crowd, face utterly expressionless. He then deftly hops down to the mat and approaches center-ring, pulling his poncho over his head and folding it neatly before handing it off to a ring tech. Finally, backing into a corner of the ring, he begins doing some light stretching and warm-up work, eyeing [the stage, if he's first out, or his opponent(s), if he isn't] all the while.

CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRANCE: See above, with the following alteration: removing the poncho will reveal DGS' currently-held championship(s), either secured around his waist (if one belt) or connected at the ends to be worn over his shoulders like a stole (if two or more).

RING ATTIRE: Wrestles in all black -- full-length tights, boots, kick//knee//elbow pads, and wrist tape -- with no pattern, symbology, or identifying mark of any kind. The only branding that can even be glimpsed is the Nike swoosh on the soles of his boots, but even those have been blacked out and are barely visible.

ENTRANCE ATTIRE: Wears a featureless, black hooded poncho down to the ring, which he doffs upon entry.

OUT-OF-RING ATTIRE: Tends almost exclusively toward casual wear: some combination of a t-shirt or cutoff and athletic shorts or sweat//trackpants in almost all instances. For more formal occasions (contract signings, meetings with management, photoshoots, etc.) the most you'll get out of him is jeans and an untucked collared shirt.

B I O G R A P H I C _ I N F O

B I O G R A P H Y
David Gideon Smith was born on May 14, 1986 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Luther and Corinne Smith. His childhood was a relatively mundane one until age eight, when his father -- an abusive alcoholic -- died in a drunk driving accident. His mother suffered a psychotic breakdown shortly thereafter and was institutionalized, where she remains to this day. In the absence of any other family, Smith and his siblings (a brother and a sister, both younger) were shunted into the foster care system, where they bounced between several different homes over the next decade.

At the age of sixteen he made his first foray into the world of wrestling, falsifying his age to gain entry into a local feeder school for Southern Variety Rasslin' (SVR). He graduated from high school and left the foster care system -- and his siblings -- behind two years later, relocating to Birmingham, Alabama and making his full-time debut for the main roster of SVR. What followed was a half-decade of teeth-cutting and name-making, which saw Smith gain a reputation as a tag-team specialist alongside childhood friend Kyle Mathic, who'd been a part of the same SVR signing class as himself. Of the pair, Smith proved the decisive standout, but it wasn't until Mathic suffered a career-ending spine injury that the tandem ended and he was forced to take up a singles career.

The success that followed was at once unexpected and overwhelming, culminating in Smith leaving SVR to sign with his first major worldwide promotion, the World Wrestling eXistence (WWX) in early 2009. Several others followed: the Extreme Wrestling Alliance (EWA) in late 2009, Full Metal Wrestling (FMW) in 2010, and the Extreme Hardcore Wrestling Federation (EHWF) in 2011, among others. But the rising tide of Smith's success came crashing to a halt in the summer of 2012, when his wife -- Rachel Reese-Smith -- was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The sickness claimed her life in a matter of months, after which Smith, in grief, threw himself back into wrestling (from which he'd taken a hiatus while Rachel was ill).

But what started as a means of coping, of healing, soon devolved into a warpath. Smith circled the globe as a perennial free agent, wrestling non-stop and forging an increasingly violent reputation, maturing into one of the most gifted, dominant, and feared competitors on the planet in the process. This culminated in Japan, where he found a place as a fixture in Garden of Eden Grappling Arts (GEGA). From late 2012 to early 2014 he amassed an unprecedented 101-0-0 undefeated streak, making him the first to earn the title of GEGA's Megalith -- bestowed upon a mere 50 consecutive victories -- in decades. Notable among these was his 99th win, in which Smith's recklessly violent tendencies reached their zenith. Provoked to a fit of rage by his opponent, fan favorite Ikuro Suga (ringname: GETSUGA), he resorted to overwhelming excess to finish the match, executing his Sovereign finishing maneuver three times in a row. GETSUGA was grievously injured by the assault and died shortly thereafter, but because the Suga family invoked a Japanese law to prevent the official cause of death from being released, no charges were filed.

Smith soon returned to the United States, continuing his warpath through a second extended run in the EHWF. It was during this time that he entered into a relationship with fellow EHWF alumnus Madison Murdock, predicated on raising a child they had together in 2013. They both left the company in 2015, after which Smith returned to free agency and toured a number of other North American promotions before arriving in Iconic Pro Wrestling (IPW) in early 2020. A relatively short stint ended in May of the same year, when Smith was abruptly declared missing by the authorities. A nationwide search ensued, spurred in part by several news outlets picking up the story of Smith's alleged involvement with a number of unsolved killings and disappearances (whether the search was better-described as a manhunt became a point of heavy contention, even after it had been called off).

At the time of this writing, he has not been found.

P E R S O N A L I T Y _ P R O F I L E
Stoic. Aloof. Apathetic. All words that have been used ad infinitum to describe David Gideon Smith, and all words that fall woefully, pathetically short of doing the job proper. The reality -- such as it is -- is that eliciting anything other than cold detachment from the wrestler known worldwide as DGS is very nearly impossible. Infamous for regarding all but those closest to him with brusque indifference (if not outright hostility), Smith has successfully alienated bookers and fellow wrestlers the world over via his utter refusal to participate in the unique brand of politics that so-often rears its head behind the curtain. This demeanor extends to the fans, as well: Smith as often as not goes entire matches without so much as acknowledging them, neither pandering nor antagonizing in favor of focusing solely on the opponent and match, and leaving the ring thereafter without fanfare of any kind.

The only exceptions to this can be glimpsed in the ring itself, where Smith's otherwise-ironclad focus is occasionally broken by muted, short-lived bursts of sadism and, more rarely, masochism. While he has been known to indulge in toying with his opponents -- giving them time and space to rise after knocking them down, holding submissions until the count of four, utilizing one's own offense against them -- he's also been observed offering them sincere and macabre encouragement, urging them to fight harder and even laughing through the pain they inflict. Of course, these tendencies -- those of a quintessential blood knight, who thrives on combat in a way that precious few can lay claim to -- are fleeting, often vanishing just as quickly as they appear, and the man himself is only ever reticent when asked about them.

The nature of the beast, it would seem.

W R E S T L I N G _ S T Y L E
An anomaly and exemplar of his craft, David Gideon Smith has amassed an in-ring repertoire that would -- and indeed, often does -- leave wrestling analysts and historians salivating. A true student of the game in every possible regard, his moveset contains curated elements of traditional American grappling, Lucha Libre, British CaCC, Greco-Roman and amateur freestyle wrestling, and the Japanese King's Road and Strong Style, as well as several different martial arts. The resulting amalgam is applied to devastating effect: knowledge, experience, and technical acumen aside, Smith is regularly cited as one of the most physically gifted wrestlers on the planet, possessing the agility and athleticism to keep pace with opponents fifty pounds lighter and the strength and endurance to overpower opponents a hundred pounds heavier.

The latter point in particular bears repeating: Smith's physical strength is nearly peerless, lending itself to such feats as -- among similar displays -- hitting several consecutive suplexes on an opponent weighing in excess of 350 pounds. This sort of power pairs well with his noted striking ability, manifesting most visibly in The Black Blade, one of the heaviest strikes in wrestling history (not for nothing, either; since its debut in late 2015, the move has yet to be kicked out after).

But even that pales in comparison to what Smith has described as his offensive opus: Sovereign, a Suplex//Ganso Bomb hybrid widely considered to be one of, if not the most dangerous wrestling maneuver on the planet, having inflicted several broken necks, skull and spinal fractures, and even outright killed one of Smith's opponents (the aforementioned GETSUGA). Aside from the clear-and-present physical threat it poses, Sovereign has also proved a potent psychological weapon, the mere possibility of its use often sufficient to throw Smith's opponents off their game.

This hints at the final, crucial piece of Smith's in-ring methodology: removing from the equation all traces of knowledge, of experience, of physical and mental acumen, the man has been described, time and again, as a cold-blooded killer. Forgoing spectacle or intricacy of any kind, he has curated an in-ring arsenal predicated solely on ruthless efficiency. Rarely leaving his feet, save for the direst of circumstances; opting for isolated, explosive strikes rather than draining combinations that might present a exploitable gap or opening; tailoring his assault to an opponent's size and style, working to target their weaknesses and neutralize their strengths; and all the while, maintaining a sense of oppressive, suffocating control over the flow of a given match, the way only an apex superpredator can.

A P O C R Y P H A
o Despite a wholly earned reputation as a bellicose fightmonger, Smith possesses a rigid and well-documented personal code of honor that he adheres to at all times: at no point has he ever been observed to cheat to win, run and hide, or facilitate a numerically unfair fight in his favor.
o Smith is often cited as one of the founding members of HAVOK, an international wrestling syndicate dedicated to the continued promotion of a traditionalist and virulently combative brand of wrestling dogma.
o From 2015 to 2019, rumors circulated that Smith had become peripherally involved with the Sixth Yamaguchi-Gumi of the Yakuza, though these rumors never specified in what capacity and went completely unsubstantiated. After ceasing for a year or so, speculation has ramped back up again with Smith's recent disappearance.
